All the Fuss with Fascinators?!

 photo hat_making_zps8e47b70a.jpg

Can you believe that it’s been two years since Kate Middleton walked down the aisle in her handmade lace Sarah Burton dress and married prince charming? I remember waking up at the crack of dawn so I didn’t miss the debut of the wedding dress that had women from all over the world on the edge of their seats! That picturesque Grace Kelly inspired gown will forever be the standard by which all other wedding dresses are judged.

However, there was something else - something even more fabulous - that I will always remember. The frou frou and almost wacky headpieces that the royal family wore loud and proud. Princess Beatrice and her now infamous “Teletubby hat” was one of the most photographed images of the day. In less than 24 hours, Beatrice’s fascinator was made into a meme, blogged by every fashion journalist, and left women the world over intrigued by her unusual accessory.

Now fascinators are nothing new in the circles of British royalty and socialites. In fact, these fancy head ornaments are worn at very posh events like weddings, garden parties and the famous horse races. Every English woman knows that she cannot just wear a fascinator; she must follow fascinator etiquette. First, it must be worn with a tilt at the side of the head, and angled toward the front or perched above the brow. Second, it must always stay on your head until the end of the event, and finally, it must not obstruct the view of the person sitting behind or beside you. Just like a crown, these pieces are worn with responsibility and pride.

It became clear that I was starting to become fascinated by fascinators, and the more I learned, the more I fell in love with their eccentric charm. I realized that there was only one designer that made these pieces a true work of art. His name is Philip Treacy. He is basically the Louis Vuitton of hats. In fact, 30 of his one-of-a-kind fascinators were worn at the royal wedding, like Beatrice’s famous “Teletubby Hat” which was auctioned off on eBay for over $150,000. Now that’s just fascinating! These famed Philip Treacy fascinators were worn by: Isabella Blow, Grace Jones and Lady Gaga.

It’s amazing how these pieces can turn an outfit into a work of art. It’s an avant-guard look that can be considered an acquired taste. But fashion is supposed to provoke emotions and turn heads. So it’s safe to say that you’ll always look twice at a woman wearing a beautiful headpiece. If you’re interested in learning more about the fascinating world of fascinators, or simply want to make one yourself, then signup for one of our fun and fabulous hat making workshops, and make yourself something that will leave Kate Middleton wishing she'd made one herself, too!

PACTfashion Students Own the Runway at Alternative Fashion Week

Last Friday night was super exciting for the Make Den and our wonderful PACTFashion students. After months of concepting, sketching, dying, sewing and fitting, our collection came to life as it debuted on the runway at Alternative Fashion Week.  Now thinking back on one of the most amazing nights of my life, I cannot tell you how proud I am of my dedicated students that gave up all their Friday nights to create a collection that left the audience inspired and myself in awe.

 photo PACTV1_zps7a3b7dd4.jpg

The collection began with sketches and a
collaboration of ideas from the PACTFashion students.
Photo taken by: Cate Lorimer

So, if you haven’t heard of PACTFashion, it’s a sewing and design school that I run for at risk youths across the GTA. These talented students work together to design and create a collection that lives up to runway standards. This year, they blew me away by designing garments that Rihanna would be proud to rock on the red carpet.  The collection’s urban flavour and eclectic mix of prints and fabrics made it seem like it was designed by a group of professional designers, and not my teenage students.

 photo PACTV3_zpsc1efdda2.jpg

On the left we see the final alterations to the
jacket being worn in the photo on the right. The week before
the fashion show was full of last minute fittings and alterations.

Photo on the right taken by: Cate Lorimer

What blew me away was the real maturity I saw during the hectic week before the show. Coming in after school without any complaints, this dedicated team worked tirelessly finishing up the final touches and sorting out important details like hair, makeup, music and accessories.   Every student had an important role to play to the success of our show. Many people think that designing a collection is just sewing clothes. But if we had a reality television show, you’d see that our PACTFashion students gave everything they had to make their creative vision come to life. Designing a solid collection is a process, and these students didn’t care if they got their hands dirty. Spectators tend to forget how much work goes into 10 looks and 15 minutes on the runway, but this gifted group stepped up to plate and hit a homerun.

 photo PACTV4_zpsf9966688.jpg

Our PACTFashion models strut their stuff on the
runway at Alternative Fashion Week.

I can’t believe our walk on the runway is over, but I am seriously looking forward to our next collection. So make sure you stop by the Make Den and take a peek at what our PACTFashion team is working on. And before I forget, some of our pieces from this year’s runway show are available for sale! All the money goes back to the PACTFashion designers. So if you see anything you like, make sure to give me a shout!

Upcycled Denim Challenge with Jake and Maya

 photo Denim_Challange_zps60c484b4.jpg

Jake and Maya are hosting an Upcycled Denim Challenge, which ends on March 31st. I thought I'd pull out some old pics of these upcycled denim outfits which I made for The Toronto Wildlife Show and Fashion Cares back when I was in school. We were fortunate to have been given access to the "backstage" area at Goodwill, where we were allowed to pull as much denim as we liked for our project. I tried to find multiple shades of denim create an ombre effect. It was tonnes of fun to make and is my official entry in the Upcycled Denim Challenge - what's your upcycled Denim Story?

Getting noticed!

Photobucket

It's nice to get noticed! Laura Adams from Blog TO wrote a great article about us today and I'm happy to report that I don't sound like a complete tool in it. Laura joined us for an Intro to Sewing Garments class, and she was a complete natural! She was also nice enough to keep us company while we were photographing the garments from the Portfolio Prep Camp last summer, and somehow managed not to laugh while I was setting up the photography equipment. Some of the interview is below, along with a few photos.
The Make Den Sewing Studio recently relocated from within 69 Vintage Collective to a new location at 1244 Bloor Street West, providing a bright and crafty addition to Bloordale's streetscape. With its robin's egg blue walls and ruffled party dress in the window, I couldn't resist popping in one dark winter evening to learn more about what this sewing and design school has to offer.
Photobucket

Founded in 2010, The Make Den offers sewing and design classes, workshops, and camps for all levels: from absolute beginners (like yours truly), to intermediate students looking to sharpen their skills, to aspiring designers applying to competitive fashion programs at institutions like Ryerson University, Parsons in New York City, and Central Saint Martins in London. The Make Den's owner, Irene Stickney, has a passion for teaching students of all levels that is infectious and heartfelt. For those pursuing sewing as a hobby--about 75% of her students--The Make Den provides an outlet to explore their creative side, which is often not fulfilled in their day jobs. Irene loves helping these students create new things, have fun, and acquire a life-long skill. For the 25% of her students pursuing a career in fashion design, Irene aims to offer top-notch instruction on technical skills and a supportive community. "Toronto has amazing designers and they need more resources. I want to be able to support designers. I want to be able to say I've made a difference for designers." The Make Den provides these students with classes, camps, studio space, endless encouragement, and even photo shoots (by Irene) to build their portfolio. Talking about her advanced students and their creations, Irene beams with pride. "Don't forget me when you're famous!" she jokes with them...

Let there be light!!!

IMG_8457

Oh my gosh was I ever terrified to take down the paper from the windows this past weekend!  After two months (we officially moved in on October 1st) of renovations it was obviously time to open up shop for the world to see.  Here's Linda, gleefully ripping the paper down.   I was not so gleeful - my heart nearly stopped while she ripped it off!   It's not that I didn't want to see light in the studio - it just felt SO official to be open, finally.

What a difference it makes!  The light is much nicer and the window looks so pretty with the lace embroidery hoops in it.  I don't know why I was so nervous about it - sharing our little studio with the world is wonderful!  So many well wishers have stopped in to say hello and congratulations, people seem very curious and excited that we're here.  I'm so pleased with our new studio, and our students have all said what a cool, fun space it is -which makes me happier than a Corgi on stilts!

I hope everyone who walks through the studio feels inspired, empowered and excited about "Making it Themselves".
xoxo
Irene

Congrats to the amazing, incredible and lovely Jenny Wheeler!

Photobucket

The Make Den would like to congratulate our absolutely amazing friend Jenny on the birth of her new son! Jenny is one of the most stylish, inspirational, beautiful, brave, smart, funny and awesome people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We met when she started taking sewing classes last summer, and I have learned as much from her about personal style as she has learned from us about sewing. Hanging out with Jenny is like having a fashion magazine editor in tow at all times. This pic was taken on our very quick trip to New York, in June this year at The Jane Hotel in Chelsea. Jenny had our itinerary planned, restaurants picked out, she even had specific designer silks picked out before we even arrived at MOOD! We spent nearly 5 hours there and then went wandered over to the Purlbee and Isabel Marant in Soho.

The next day, we headed north to the MET for the Schiaparelli Exhibit: Photobucket

The Circus Collection was what stood out the most to me, with the tiny embroidered men swinging across the shoulders of the pink bolero jacket, and which was notable for the amazing examples of embroidery from the House of Lesage in it's heyday.

It was the best idea ever and I will always be happy that I got to have Jenny all to myself for a weekend before her adventures in motherhood started!

Olga + New Skirt = Awesomeness

Photobucket
Here's Olga looking rad in her new two tone/blue on blue pencil skirt in stretch cotton. But not only did she make this skirt herself - she also made the pattern for it from scratch! And now she also knows how to taper and hem skirts so that they fit perfectly, put new zippers into old clothing, use a serger and more! Here's what Olga has to say about her new sewing skillz...
“Thank you so much for teaching me sewing! You are an awesome teacher and I learned lots of little tricks from you that I wouldn’t have learned anywhere else. Most importantly, you taught me to be patient and that a good skirt requires lots of work but it’s worth it in the end.”

Silk Painting at Portfolio Prep Camp

Photobucket It's portfolio prep time this week at The Make Den! This is one of the most exciting times of the year. Students work on developing their own style, sense of colour, design and 'personal brand' while trying out new techniques and mediums - like this awesome silk painting by Adace! It was easy and quick but looked phenomenal when she was finished. We stretched the silk over an embroidery hoop to help it stay flat while she painted on it - hence the round shape of the painting. After the experimentation phase, we will decide if this is the right technique to use on her garment - it's definitely a stunning effect on here!

Debbie's Darling Blue Design!

PhotobucketPhotobucket ................................................................... Debbie is not only the #1 wedding blogger in the UK, but she also introduced me to the awesomeness that is the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. And here she is rocking out in her new handmade Royal Blue dress - fits her like a glove, doesn't it?! My only complaint is that I don't get to see Debbie around the studio anymore, now that her dress is finished... come back and make another one, Debbie Darling!

Congrats again Andrea!

Photobucket Good news all around this week, as a double congrats is in order - not only was Andrea accepted into Fashion Communications for Fall 2012 (see below), but also Fashion Design. Check out Andrea's awesome teal dress from Alternative Fashion Week, above. She custom cut it to fit Alyssa and boy does it ever fit like a glove! This beauty is in the window at 69 Vintage Collective right now and available for sale if anyone's looking for the perfect prom dress... email themakeden@hotmail.com if you'd like to try it on - get it now, before Andrea becomes the next DVF!

Proud of you Andrea!!!

Photobucket

Toronto's next rising fashion star? Our bet is on Andrea Lee. She might seem quiet at first, but watch out! This girl's got TALENT written all over her. She started working on her portfolio last summer (and so should you if you don't want to be rushed!) and made this hand draped/hand beaded dress for her first portfolio piece. Also, did we mention that she's secretly a supermodel? This is her, modelling her own work - double threat! We are SO thrilled to be able to congratulate her on her acceptance to Ryerson's Fashion Communications program for Sept 2012. So proud of you, Andrea!!!

Fun things happening around the studio...

Photobucket

...like this skirt. It was a ballsy fabric pick (electric lemon!) but it worked like a charm. All the teachers (myself included) wanted one of these beauties when it was finished.   Sometimes all it takes is an awesome colour to add some punch to your wardrobe - awesome work, Veronica!

Amazing Amanda and her 3 hour Leather Belt

Photobucket

This totally blew my mind! Amanda came in with the coolest outfit on already - red leopard print pants and a fancy matching bow - but look what she left in! She finished this awesome black leather waist-cincher in under 3 hours - which is impressive considering it's made out of recycled leather. NOT the easiest fabric to work with.   Must have been those awesome Janome machines and their super-tough leather needles - they can sew through anything.  Way to go Amanda!!!

We will be running our Awesome Leather Belts Workshop with Cat Essiambre again on Friday June 1st from 1-4pm.    The class fee is only $55~.

Congrats, Cal!

Photobucket

Waiting for an acceptance letter from a university can be a totally nerve wracking thing - but when good news comes, it's pretty much the most exciting thing ever! Congratulations to Callandre P, our awesome student from last summer's Portfolio Prep Camp who has just been accepted into Ryerson's Fashion Communications program. Cal made a drop dead gorgeous, hand draped emerald green mini dress with a bright orange belt and an exposed zipper up the back for her portfolio. She worked so patiently on it last summer and the results from our photoshoot at the Drake were phenomenal!

No one deserves a spot in the program more, and we wish her the best in all her exciting adventures at school in Toronto next year! Congrats, Cal!

Beachy Crafting and A New Website!

Photobucket
Photobucket

You can't tell from the photos above, but this is me crafting on the beach. Inspired by my awesome friend, student and fellow crafty mama Jenny Wheeler, (who brought a whole heap of hand-smocking with her to Mexico!) I decided to bring some embroidery with me on my trip to Cuba. Best. Idea. Ever.

Sure, I got some funny looks as I was sitting in the bar, by the pool and at the hotel lobby with my embroidery hoop and giant pack of DMC coloured threads. But I managed to embroider headers for each and every page of the new website AND got a tan while doing it! I'll be posting some of the results later this week but I wanted to share some crafty vacation pics with you right now. And I think it's safe to say that I am only taking crafty vacations from now on - wanna come?!

Congratulations on winning the Gold Medal in the TDSB sewing skills competition, Aziz and Andrea!

Photobucket

This is possibly the best "student's helping out other students" story that has come out of the PACTfashion program yet:

Aziz and Andrea are both PACT students. Aziz was excited to enter the Toronto District School Board Sewing Skills competition, but was disappointed to learn that there weren't enough interested students at his high school, Westview. Andrea happened to know the woman who was organizing the competition, and wrote her a letter at the 11th hour, asking if Aziz could still enter the competition. She said yes, and so Aziz and Andrea both entered the city wide competition. After an entire day of interviews, cutting and sewing - Aziz and Andrea tied for the Gold Medal in the competition and are going on to compete in the regional competition next month!

I am SO proud of both of my awesome students for their hard work, commitment and mad skillz! Congratulations, Aziz and Andrea!!!

New Year's Belle!

Photobucket

Wow! Happy New Years to everyone, especially to Courtney - who worked SO hard to make this awesome NYE party frock! I can't imagine a better way to ring in the new year than by wearing a stunning dress that you've made for yourself. Courtney used black satin, black lace, satin bias tape and put in HOURS of hard work both at the studio and at home to finish this stunning piece. The lace is very delicate and fragile, so everything was hand stitched before it was machine sewn. It is a perfect fit, and taking the extra time to sew up a muslin for yourself is totally worth it when you get that 'custom' look at the end. Even the bias tape was hand-made AND hand-stitched to match the satin of the dress. Courtney was so patient and careful with her beautiful dress, and it was obviously worth it - this really is a couture garment and I can't wait to see what she whips up for herself next!

Courtney also runs an Etsy shop called Woolly Bully where she sells her own crocheted scarves, shawls and even coffee cup cozies! They are the most adorable things ever, and I was lucky enough to get one for Christmas this year! I use mine all the time. Congrats on your awesome work, Courtney!

Your status as a DIY Queen is undeniable once you've got these beauties under your belt.

We are SO excited to be offering a workshop series with the one and only Cat Essiambre (as seen in Teen Vogue, BBC World and voted one of Toronto's Fashion Hero's by NOW magazine) Cat has also worked with Philip Sparks, Thomas and is a member of the very awesome Deadly Nightshades.

Here's how it works: All through January and February, you can take an accessories class every Friday from 1-4pm or 1-5pm.
Make one, or make all 5! Receive a 10% discount if you sign up for more than 3 classes. Beginners are welcome.
